Wade Armstrong died from a stroke at his home in New Zealand on June 11, 2022.

He was 74. An outstanding rugby player, athlete and scholar, Wade graduated from Bristol University in 1969 and followed his father, Valentine, into the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as a diplomat in Vietnam, Tokyo, Canberra, and New York before becoming ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, High Commissioner in Ottawa and Ambassador to the EU and Belgium.

He leaves his wife, Prem and children Daniel and Laura, from his first marriage to Thuy, who pre-deceased him.
