Obituary – John Hilton
John Hilton (Caterham School 1941-1947)
11.05.1929 – 29.01.2025
John spent his early years in The Marlborough, in Romford, Essex, where his father was the proprietor. Ironic really, as a pub was the last place you would find him in later life! He began boarding at Caterham School during the war and stayed until he reached the age of 18. He had many happy memories of his time at Caterham School and the friends made there. It was through these
friends that he met his wife, Margaret (Mew), at an association dance at the Hurlingham Club. A marriage that spanned almost 65 years.
When not supervising the building of infrastructure for local authorities John could be found either on the dance floor, or in his garden, where he had an extensive vegetable plot and well-tended flower beds.
Once retired he returned to his love of wood and spent many happy hours in his shed with his lathe. A shed he was happy to share with anyone who needed ’a little something to fit’, or help with a school project, or just to learn. His patience was endless and his gentle habit of nudging you into the right position was felt by many.
To John. Husband, father, grandfather, friend. Thank you.
