A letter from Ceri Jones, Headmaster of Caterham School

Dear Old Cats,

Many thanks to the large number of you who have been in touch with me following my letter in January outlining our complete separation from United Learning. The feedback has been unanimously positive from all generations of Old Cats and it is clear that you are as excited as we are about the future opportunities this presents for the school.

Together with our Trustees, I am working with all members of the Caterham School community to help frame a vision for the future of the school which is as bold and transformative as the original founders of the school were. The school has never been in better shape and we can and should look towards the future with great confidence and ambition. The Old Cats will play a crucial role in supporting the school on the next phase of our journey, as part of the wider Caterham School Society.

Many of you already support the school in a number of ways – work experience, interview practice and careers fairs – for which I am very grateful indeed. I am looking for your support in expanding this engagement across all areas at this crucial stage in our history. Not only in extending the range of opportunities and support you provide to current Caterhamians but also in helping us reconnect with other members of the Old Cats who have drifted away.

A more immediate way in which the Old Cats may help the school is by helping us develop our Trustee body. The Trustees of the school are currently looking to recruit up to four additional Trustees and are asking the Old Cats and The Foundation for possible nominations. Nominations will also be sought from other networks and shortlists will be drawn up by the nominations committee of the Trustees. Expertise is sought in the fields of Communications & Marketing, Development (Fundraising), Technology & Digital and Higher Education. There is sufficient financial experience already on the Board, so expertise is not sought in that area. The Trustees play a crucial role in the life of the school – they are looking for nominations from those who have the time to commit to make an outstanding contribution to the school. For those of you who are interested please contact Eloise Väisänen ( / tel: 01883 335091).

I look forward to seeing many of you at future Old Cats events and to working with you to shape the next stage of our journey.

Yours sincerely
Ceri Jones
