The idea of an Association for former pupils of Caterham
School was first mooted on 16th March 1891 at a social meeting of Old Boys
held at the Memorial Hall in Farringdon Street, London. The concept was
warmly received and a general meeting was called for on the 2nd May 1891
to approve the planned Associations formation. Like all good ideas the
response was enthusiastic and the OCA was born to delighted acclamation.
The first President was Martin Luther Moss, who had been treasurer of the
fund which resulted in the swimming baths we all remember. Percival Rees
was the Honorary Treasurer, and Bernard Kettle and T.S White the Honorary
Secretaries.
The two objectives of the original Association were stated quite
simply.
Incredibly, one hundred and nine years later, the objectives remain
pretty much the same. The only alteration within the current constitution
being the stated objective that members should benefit from regular
communication to inform them of the activities of Caterham School
and the Association.
Throughout its distinguished history the Association has fulfilled
its objectives in many and varied ways. Certainly its contribution
to school life is unquestioned. A few of the more obvious highlights
include the Swimming Pool (1888 pre-Association but not pre-Old
Boy influence), the Sports Pavillion (1899), Mottrams (1934), the Main
School Archway (1984), and the Humphreys Hall Organ (1991).
The above represent some of the more transparent help that the
Association provides for Caterham School but there are many, many
more. Think of the scholarships it has provided to pupils, and
the wide range of social and sporting activities which it promotes. Then
you appreciate the vibrancy and enthusiasm which exists within
the current Association so many years after its conception.
With Old Caterhamians' Days, Leavers Lunches, Annual Dinners and
the 'Presidents At Home', to say nothing of the informal gatherings
worldwide of former pupils - there is always some way in which
to remain in touch and remember our time at Caterham..
Surely there can be few Schools where the bond between friends
is so strong and so lasting. The Association provides a cornerstone
for this friendship, and as importantly, a platform for all its
members to 'give back' to the School which has provided them with so
much. Carpe Diem! Seize the Day!
