‘’In Georgian times, the Reverend John Townsend’s philanthropy shone as a beacon among the desperate and the destitute. The national mood was menacing, and revolution simmered just below the surface. However, the good Christian works of Townsend and his colleagues relieved suffering on a broad scale and set new directions for future generations.
Townsend ministered throughout London and its surrounds for over 47 years. He co-founded Bermondsey’s Asylum for Deaf and Dumb Indigent Children in 1792, Britain’s first publicly-funded charity for educating deaf children. In 1811, he founded the Congregational School, now Caterham School for the sons of poor Congregational ministers.
His vision then has translated into reality today as, with broadened mandates and updated names, each school continues to thrive.
Along with William Wilberforce and other dedicated workers, his leadership led to the creation of numerous benevolent organizations including: The London Missionary Society; The Religious Tract Society and the British and Foreign Bible Society. Most of these also continue to remain forces for good to this day.
Yet for much of this time, Townsend’s efforts were opposed by many. His frame was wracked with pain and suffering. In his family life there was deep tragedy, yet his tirelessly-pursued Christian convictions shine through as an example to us all.
In his time, Townsend was honoured for his humility, compassion, insights and humanity.
Today he remains a model in life and in death.’’
John Townesend has produced a fascinating read about a truly great man including many references to Caterham School.

Clare Brown, the Head of Careers, has issued the following notices:
The Careers Department would like to expand its database of careers contacts for current students and would like to ask for your help.
Students find that talking to professionals about their careers can be extremely helpful in helping them to make decisions about higher education and their future. The Careers Department keeps an updated bank of information including email addresses and telephone numbers, of OC’s who are prepared to be contacted to offer advice. We are keen to involve more OC’s in this invaluable scheme and would be delighted to hear from anyone who feels they can help in this way.
Please email Clare Brown at clare.brown@caterhamschool.co.uk if you are interested and she will forward a form for you to complete. Please be assured that no information will be passed onto any third parties.
Work experience can be a valuable option for our students to taste the world outside Caterham School and view the types of careers that they are interested in. We would be delighted to hear from anyone who is able to offer that opportunity within his or her organization. In 2005 the most popular professions appear to be psychology, physiotherapy, medicine, law, IT and computing, speech therapy, architecture, graphic design, marketing, advertising and business management. Please contact Clare Brown on extension 307 or email her at clare.brown@caterhamschool.co.uk for more information.

The good news is that again this year, we have
been able to increase the grant we make available to the Headmaster for
bursaries; the not so good news is that the increase is only very modest
and we ought to be doing better. Thank you to all OCs who have made donations
and who continue to do so. We need more donors – whatever you can
give will be most welcome. Please consider supporting this very worthy
cause that helps to maintain the ethos of our school. Bankers order
and Gift Aid forms are attached. Thank you for your support.

As of September 2006 we are launching a new initiative to encourage a greater emphasis on charitable giving and community service amongst the students at Caterham School.
The idea is to formalise and extend the variety of charity events that we organise (e.g. non-uniform days, Talent Show, Macmillan Coffee Morning) in order to hit a target of £10,000 in the academic year 2006-07. A charity committee run mainly by 6th formers will take a lead but will be supported by staff and younger students (including the Prep School).
In tandem with that, the school is establishing a society to spearhead a community service programme. The aim here is that ALL U6th formers and as many junior students as possible have the opportunity to serve their community in a variety of ways. Projects and placements will include helping reading and sports coaching at the Pre-Prep School, supporting the Orpheus and Marie Curie Centres and providing assistance to local primary schools, nursing homes and Oxfam shops. The Headmaster has also set up formal links with the Lerangwa School in Tanzania and much of the focus of our efforts will be directed to improving academic / sporting / charitable links with that school. The long term vision would see Caterham students twinned with students in Tanzania with the view of seeing a group of U6th students visiting Lerangwa as part of an international community programme during the summer that they leave Caterham.
To assist us in this process we are hoping to call upon the corroboration, advice and expertise of the Parents Association, the Old Caterhmanians and the United Reformed Church. These partner groups are essential components in ensuring the success of this venture.
How can these groups help?
If you are able to help or support us in any way we would love to hear from you. Please contact either Mr. David Clark or Mrs. Clare Brown on the numbers below:
